Director Gary Overton is a talented designer and architect, leading our Bristol and Cardiff offices with over 17 years’ experience in the practice. Inspired by strong collaboration between different people, roles, and responsibilities, he proudly champions the diverse talent across AHR and how, together, it is integral to exceptional project delivery.

“I’m constantly surprised by what people achieve when they work together collaboratively, I try to foster effective communication and encourage others to participate, good design comes from good process.”

Whilst his experience spans a range of sectors, including technology and civic and community, he has developed a specialist knowledge in the design of learning spaces. He heads our education sector and leads the National Education Focus Group, where the team share their knowledge, insights, and latest innovations to develop our service.

Gary taught Architecture at the University of Bath where he was a year 2 studio leader. He is passionate about the education of architects and the belief in a fair and inclusive right to education, and relishes the opportunity to support young people as they embark on their career in the profession. He is proud to lead the RIBA AHR scholarship, which provides financial, paid work experience, and mentoring support.

Gary is an expert at considering how we can effectively repurpose existing buildings, by retaining their features through imaginative refit for future use. Sustainability remains at the heart of all of his designs, and something he championed when building his own house. Beyond his role, he enjoys spending time outdoors in nature, where you’ll often find him either tending to his garden or mountain biking in and around Bristol and South Wales.
