Winterstoke Hundred Academy in Weston-super-Mare takes home two awards - Building of the Year and Education Project of the Year at the prestigious awards ceremony, hosted in Exeter.

In response to the growing number of students in the area, our architecture team designed the expansion, which includes a new 900-place secondary school, with the capacity to expand and welcome up to 1,200 students in the future.

The Michelmores Property Awards celebrates the best property, development and construction projects in the South West and we’re delighted that our expansion project has been recognised in this way.”

A fantastic new environment for young people to learn, socialise and grow

Creating efficient and purposeful use of the space, the project is split into two separate buildings, one for the main teaching block and another for the sports facilities. The main teaching building, a stepped structure across three floors, is thoughtfully organised around a central space.

The single storey sports building offers expansive, versatile spaces for a range sports and leisure activities.

Enhancing the educational landscape further, the fantastic learning facility includes a new multi-use games area, sports playing fields and external spaces for learning and socialising. Additionally, to foster better connections between Winterstoke Hundred Academy and local residents, the school provides secure access to its facilities for the community.

Sustainability at the heart

The design places a strong emphasis on incorporating passive design principles, focussing on strategies aimed at minimising the building’s energy consumption. Considering elements such as the building’s orientation, form and massing, as well as optimising the building fabric and natural daylighting.

There is a large array of photovoltaic panels on the main building roof, which contributes to net zero operation carbon for the building’s energy use. Additionally, the project is on track to achieve BREEAM Excellent certification, underscoring our commitment to creating a sustainable future for both the school and the broader community.

The school has been designed to have a positive effect on wellbeing for the staff and students with views out to the countryside beyond and wide naturally lit circulation.
