How we’re inspiring young people to pursue careers in architecture and building consultancy roles
by AHR
We’re committed to providing opportunities for all and we love inspiring the next generation with their career aspirations by providing industry insight and guidance at various events.
Opening young minds to the industry
Since January, we’ve attended ten events aimed at encouraging young people to think about their future career aspirations and discover more about the different paths available to them, with another two booked for October.
The first careers event of the year was the ‘World of Work Day’ at St Andrew’s Junior School in Brighouse, which saw Stephen Bottom and Thomas English present to Year 5 and 6 students.
Their presentation introduced the pupils to the architecture and building consultancy industry, hoping to raise aspirations, challenge stereotypes and open their eyes to the wide range of jobs available in the working world.
Stephen and Thomas also used the opportunity to take part in activities and workshops with the year groups to allow the students to tap into their creativity and understand the skills required in the workplace.
Supporting students to make informed decisions about their future
We also attended the careers fair at Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College in Leeds in January. We have a longstanding relationship with this client with whom we have carried out a wealth of projects, including a recent expansion scheme.
C+K Careers held their first annual apprenticeship event of the year at John Smith’s Stadium in Huddersfield in February, where Olivia Thompson spoke to young people about opportunities to help kickstart their careers, such as graduate schemes and apprenticeships.
This event highlighted the practical steps students can take to enter the profession, offering guidance on making informed decisions about their futures.
March was a busy month for careers fairs as ‘Employability Week’ saw us attend Kirklees College’s careers events, one of which was held at their Huddersfield Campus and the other at their Springfield Campus in Dewsbury.
We also headed to the Employer’s Event at Calder High School and C+K Career’s second apprenticeship event, this time at Shay Stadium in Halifax.
To help students build their confidence and improve their interview skills, we conducted mock interviews with Year 9 students at Park Lane Academy in Huddersfield. Which we hope will come in useful should they apply to go to university or look for work in the future.
Over the summer, we went to the careers fair at Huddersfield New College, who are another of our longstanding and valued clients. We also presented at a STEM Event at Moorlands Primary School, aimed at younger children and introducing them to our industry.
Looking ahead to October, we are excited to continue our outreach with the C+K Careers ‘Get Inspired’ Careers Fairs at John Smith’s Stadium in Huddersfield and Shay Stadium in Halifax.
