Nature and learning: The thoughtful landscape design behind this inspiring education environment
by AHR
Woodmill and St Columba's RC High School, the UK's largest Passivhaus educational building, is a prime example of how nature and learning can seamlessly coexist.
Our landscape design fosters a connected, campus-like environment that not only strengthens collaboration among staff and pupils but also enriches the surrounding community, enhances biodiversity and promotes the wellbeing of all.
As part of a wider masterplan, our vision was to connect all elements of the school through a thoughtful landscape strategy.
How have we shaped spaces for social learning and relaxation?
- Plenty of social and outdoor teaching spaces enable pupils to learn and interact in a relaxed setting
- Courtyards and casual seating have been introduced, where pupils can chat, take their lunch or simply relax during leisure time
- A secure garden provides pupils with additional needs support, by giving opportunities for outdoor learning and play in a more relaxed environment. This includes recreational lawn areas, sensory planting and surfaces with picnic tables and benches
Listen below to discover more from the minds behind the project about how these green spaces create a harmonious blend of nature and education.
Did you know that the school was met with overwhelming positivity from pupils and teachers alike when welcomed its first cohort of pupils in the autumn.
As they embraced the new, modern facilities, the essence of this learning environment came to life through the voices of those who benefit from it.
