Supporting a local community library to enhance their facilities
by AHR
In line with our social value commitment to aid and enhance local communities, we’re providing design and planning application support to a volunteer-run library in Huddersfield.
Opened in 1936, Honley Library has been an integral part of the community ever since.
In 2013, following news that the library was facing the threat of closure due to financial constraints, Friends of Honley Library (FoHL) was formed. The dedicated group campaigned to save the service and, over time, became increasingly involved in the recruitment of volunteers to ensure the facility could be maintained.
Volunteers not only give their time to helping look after the core library services but also provide strategic support, promotional work, fundraising, organising events and activities.
To support this essential community hub, we’re providing design and planning application support, free of charge, on a scheme which will enhance the library with the provision of remodelling works, designed to maximise natural light, ease accessibility and provide improved facilities.
This week marks an exciting milestone in the progress of the project as the planning application for the work has been submitted.
To collect accurate and detailed information about the existing building, our geomatics team used laser scanners to carry out a Scan to BIM survey of the library. This information was used to form the basis of our design concepts for the redevelopment plans which will also support the application for planning permission.
Keep an eye on our social media channels where we’ll keep you updated on the progress of this exciting project!
In the meantime, why not read about our recent project, where we helped support the local community through the delivery of a new build community centre on behalf of the Diocese of Shrewsbury.
As architects and building consultants, we have an opportunity to enhance the health, wellbeing, and prosperity of the people who use our places and the communities we work in – making a positive contribution to social, economic and environmental issues.
