Our Huddersfield office has welcomed seven work experience students so far this year, with another four set to join us between August and October.

We’re passionate about supporting young people into careers in architecture and building consultancy and offering work experience placements is a great way for us to share our knowledge and offer mentorship opportunities that foster their aspirations. It’s also a great way for students to see first-hand what a working week might look like in their future professions.

What did they get up to?

To enable students to gain an insight into how all parts of our practice works, we offer a varied week which allows them to work within our numerous departments and see what our colleagues get up to.

In Huddersfield, we provide many services, including accounting and finance, marketing and business development, production, IT and web development, and administration. Additionally, the delivery of projects by our technical staff which includes teams of building surveyors, project managers, principal designers and architectural staff.

I have really enjoyed the site visits and learning how each department has unique responsibilities and how they fit together.

My favourite part was touring the site at The George Hotel as Tim knew everything there was to know and taught me lots about the history and future of the building. I couldn’t have asked for a better week!”

Learning about life in the office

Students are able to experience life in the office, from learning how to use specialist software such as Revitt to have a go at designing buildings, working with our IT department to help problem solve any IT queries, to crafting social media posts with our marketing department.

We also encourage work experience students to attend internal staff meetings so they can gain an insight into working life.

Discovering how our projects develop on site

So that students can gain an understanding as to how our projects develop once on site, our building surveyors and project managers take them along to visit some of our ongoing projects, enabling them to meet our clients, sit in on meetings and observe surveys being carried out.

Recently, students have visited local historical buildings, such as The George Hotel, and high-rise tower blocks in Huddersfield and Bradford, as well as a number of churches and schools.

We look forward to welcoming our future work experience students and to inspire a new generation of architects and building surveyors.
