Chelmsford Magistrates Court
Chelmsford, UK
project overview
An important addition to Chelmsford in a prime location
Following our previous work with the Her Majesty’s Courts Service (HMCS) in selecting sites for consolidating the courts services in Essex and the preparation of a feasibility study, we were appointed to design two new Magistrates court buildings for both Chelmsford and Colchester. The development accommodates five Magistrate court rooms and a Crown Court.
The careful arrangement of the building provides a main courts level at first floor, comprising four Magistrates’ courts, with the Crown Court and family court sitting at the third floor level above.
The main entrance is designed as a prominent piece of townscape, knitting together the urban fabric and providing easy wayfinding for visitors. Designed to the HMCS Design Guide 2007, the building achieves BREEAM Excellent and set a new standard in smart, sustainable design within court buildings.
