Coal Orchard
Taunton, UK
project overview
A significant contribution to a town’s welcomed revival
Part of the wider regeneration of Taunton, the riverside development Coal Orchard will be an essential part of creating a better connected and community-driven place for the Somerset town.
The council’s objective is to create a sense of belonging, a place for residents to live, do business and socialise. The new development maximises the riverside setting and integrates a variety of facilities, including affordable apartments, shops, units suitable for start-up businesses, restaurants, bars and gyms, to achieve this.
In addition, the council wanted the River Tone to remain at the heart of the development. We made full use of the site by providing an essential link between the town centre and other key areas along the river. With increased accessibility and connectivity, our designed urban residential blocks include a vibrant pedestrian route to the river.
The development will be an engaging destination, with a new riverfront plaza with stepped terrace, making the most of the site’s valuable position on the River Tone. This was vital in creating dynamic public space for all to enjoy.
