project overview
Providing a dedicated residential facility in the North East
As part of our ongoing relationship with The Enquire Learning Trust, we were appointed to deliver a new Field Study Centre at one of their sites in the North East. This purpose-built residential facility is designed specifically for school trips, providing students with a dedicated space to explore, learn and connect in a new environment.
We have worked with the Trust since 2015, providing a wide range of building consultancy services to support a variety of schemes, including condition surveys, maintenance and development projects, refurbishments and remodelling works, extensions and accessibility improvements.
The new build centre replaces an old nursery building, which was partially demolished as part of the scheme.
gathering data
Understanding the site and managing the project through meaningful collaboration
We carried out initial survey works, which included working with a multidisciplinary team which supported us in reviewing the drainage and structural elements. We then provided the concept designs for the expansion works to create the tender package and manage the adjudication.
On review of the existing building, traces of Asbestos were found in the ceiling which required removal before demolition.
We managed this process to ensure works were carried out safely and without delay to the project.
Following a review of the tenders received, it was decided that the expansion would be formed of a modular construction to best meet our client’s budget requirements. The modular contractors refined our original designs to meet the specifications.
multi-use facility
A versatile space with educational and sustainability elements
The new Field Study Centre provides a multi-use space and overnight accommodation for students and staff, with an en suite, air-conditioning unit and LED lighting in each room for optimum comfort.
To support the Trust in meeting their sustainability targets, the building is fully electric.
Adding an educational element to the project, each room has been individually named, with inspiration coming from local Viking history. To inspire and educate the pupils staying there, noticeboards in each room provide useful information about each.
Providing space for outdoor activities, a firepit made from a recycled concrete planter has been installed, along with accompanying seating made from fire-proofed sustainably sourced timber.
Other external works include the expansion of the car park and the provision of two EV charging ports, as well as improved safeguarding measures with the installation of new 6ft fencing.
As part of this scheme, we also carried out refurbishment works to the existing building, including works to the WCs and cloakroom to ensure standards met those of the new build expansion.
social value
Supporting the local community and economy
The Field Study Centre not only supports the Trust in providing high quality facilities for their students and staff, but also supports the local economy, encouraging the use of catering services and events from local suppliers.
The open day was attended by many from the wider community, including staff from other schools, lifeboat services and local food outlets and has been well received by all.
