Hicks Gate Fire Station
Bristol, UK
project overview
A smart and dynamic space enabling fire fighters to carry out their vital services
Hicks Gate Fire Station in Bristol is a five bay fire station situated in a strategic location between Keynsham and Bristol with great access onto the local road network. The station has also been built with a number of environmentally friendly features, making it one of the most energy efficient fire stations in the UK.
The station is home to several
fire appliances, a foam unit, a salvage unit, the Environmental Response Unit
and the Red Cross Emergency Response vehicle. On site facilities include a training tower, a hot fire
training facility and a confined space training facility.
The building is arranged across two floors. To reduce the internal response distances in the case of emergency call outs, we positioned the operational services on the ground floor with living and social spaces on the first floor.
Promoting a professional, public-facing image, offices are located at the front of the site, making the fire fighters visible to passersby.
Simplicity was key to this design. We used a small palette of materials which are commonly found in other agricultural buildings in the area. This consisted of a mix of anthracite corrugated metal cladding with elements of timber.
Attention was given to the detailing of the budget cladding material to deliver a strong, sophisticated aesthetic; helping to reinforce the interesting and modern external look whilst also blending into the surrounding environment.
