Keynsham Riverside Leisure Centre
Bath, UK
project overview
A high-quality leisure centre at the heart of Keynsham’s regeneration
Keynsham Riverside Leisure Centre demonstrates Bath and North East Somerset Council’s (B&NES) commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of their residents. The refurbished leisure centre continues our regneration of Keynsham and is part of B&NES’ strategy to reinvigorate the town by providing enhanced facilities and an improved public realm.
Originally constructed in the 1970s the Riverside complex included a basement leisure centre with several floors of offices above. We were initially appointed to undertake feasibility studies for demolishing the entire building to construct a new leisure centre. Our studies showed that by refurbishing and extending the buildings, it would achieve better value for the council and significantly reduce embodied carbon by reusing the existing reinforced concrete frame and masonry walls.
By converting the old snooker club, we have significantly expanded the leisure centre, whilst also upgrading the facilities. As well as modernising the existing pool and health club, we have extended the basement level to create a new learner pool and incorporated a new fitness suite.
We fully glazed the previously solid walls, which has not only created visual connections with the surrounding parkland, but the impact and visibility of the sports centre has also been also improved. All of these elements create a high-quality, social fitness experience.
The leisure centre sits within the town centre next to Keynsham Civic Centre and One-Stop-Shop and is part of the Keynsham Riverside development, which provides much-needed housing for the revitalised town.
