PROJECT OVERVIEW
Future-proofing much-loved Victorian markets
Following a £3.4m transformation, Leek’s Trestle Market and Butter Market provide refreshed future-proofed facilities with modern, flexible spaces for business and community use, as well as an enhanced customer experience with upgraded safety and security.
We were appointed to lead the scheme, which was funded by the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund, set up to ensure that no community is left behind by helping to support local economic growth.
To support Staffordshire Moorlands District Council in securing the funding for the project, our building consultancy team delivered an initial RIBA Stage 2 feasibility report, outlining design options, along with advice and recommendations in response to our client’s key objectives.
Assisting our client to make informed decisions for the works, the report also highlighted opportunities for incorporating carbon reduction measures, as well cost estimates for the various design options.
We were then appointed to deliver RIBA Stages 3, 4 and 5 for refurbishment and alteration works, comprising the renewal of frontages to the retail units at Butter Market and the installation of food and beverage outlets to the Trestle Market space.
Collaborating with Speller Metcalfe, Alliance Leisure and Abacus, we managed the refurbishment works through to completion.
PROTECTING HERITAGE
Providing sustainable and sensitive design solutions
Whilst the works have provided much needed enhancements to modernise the space, our designs were carefully considered to protect the legacy of the 1890s buildings. At Butter Market, the shopfronts have been recreated in a modern interpretation of Victorian style, thoughtfully designed to honour the building’s rich heritage.
Supporting the Council’s net zero target, solar panels and air source heat pumps have been installed, along with replacement of the Trestle Market roof to improve insulation.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Monthly markets supporting the local economy
Creating exciting business opportunities for the local community, each month there will be four themed Friday markets which will begin in the new year, including Fashion Friday, Foodie Friday, Makers and Artists Market and Vintage Vendredi.
