Parkside School, Roof Repairs
Bradford, UK
Project overview
Supporting the maintenance and development of a secondary school
Parkside School is a 11-18 school in Cullingworth, Bradford. In September 2023, it became a member of Wellspring Academy Trust which comprises of 32 academies located across North East Lincolnshire and West and South Yorkshire.
Following separately commissioned condition surveys at the school, which identified various issues with the existing roof, we were appointed to undertake the role of lead consultant and act as Principal Designer for CDM on a scheme to deliver rooflight replacement works to the ten glazed lantern rooflights and repair work to the existing metal roof sheets.
Gathering data
Carrying out drone surveys to capture detailed information
To ensure we had sufficient information to allow us to create the comprehensive design and specification for the repair works, we undertook a further survey of the school roof for review alongside the existing condition reports.
Using sophisticated drone technology, our geomatic consultancy team gathered high-definition images of the roof without the need for time-consuming and cumbersome equipment, such as scaffolding or cherry pickers. The data captured was used to produce accurate plans of the roof and inform the proposed scope of works on the scheme.
Repair works
Providing specialised repairs and the provision of a new skylight
The roof was showing signs of corrosion in some areas so to rectify this, we carried out repair and replacement works to the ridge flashing and sealant as well as cut edge corrosion repairs to the roof perimeter.
To resolve issues with water ingress, the existing duo-pitch skylights were replaced with a new mono-pitch skylight consisting of a mixture of opening and fixed glazing panels. The new energy-efficient glass supports the reduction of heat loss from the school building which, in turn, reduces utility bills for the client. The new opening vents are automatically controlled to address issues with overheating that were experienced by the academy.
Multidisciplinary team
Delivering cost efficiency along with quality service
To ensure cost efficiency and a quality service, our role included the preparation of full tender specification for the Trust to use in a competitive tender to contractors.
Ensuring the project was delivered to specified timeframes, as lead consultant we also managed the appointed multidisciplinary team throughout, holding regular progress meetings and maintaining consistent communication with the whole team.
