Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH)
Shrewsbury, UK
project overview
A transformative healthcare project designed to improve care for the communities it serves
This major hospital project, now known as the ‘Hospitals Transformation Programme’ (HTP) will revolutionise healthcare in the region, providing state of the art medical facilities and cutting-edge technology in a patient-focussed environment.
The project involves refurbishing, remodelling and extending the existing Emergency Department, along with constructing a new hospital design.
The goal is to optimise healthcare across two sites, Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford and Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) in Shrewsbury. It will see RSH becoming the centre for critical care, housing the Emergency Department, Critical Care Unit and Women & Children’s services, while PRH will become the Planned Care site, accommodating the Urgent Treatment Centre and Surgical Centre. Plans will support the HTP’s vision to deliver two thriving hospitals and better care for everyone.
vision
Crafting a seamless and efficient hospital experience
The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital currently faces challenges stemming from its gradual growth, leading to problems with movement, navigation and departmental arrangements. Our design aims to solve these problems by creating a thoughtful and organised hospital facility.
This includes better layouts for departments, improved paths for movement and enhanced orientation areas. Additionally, the project prioritises creating distinct entrances and enhancing the overall site layout through improved landscaping.

project aims
Providing efficient, effective, people-centred care in one healthy environment
The HTP was created to fulfill the Trust’s goal of offering acute medical care in one location. The service changes consider the local population’s requirements. Emphasising social value and sustainability, the building’s design prioritises the wellbeing of both staff and patients at all levels. This approach leads to enhanced patient comfort, offering more individual beds for increased privacy and dignity.
Staff accommodation will be improved, featuring well-positioned dedicated areas for rest and easy reach, with abundant natural light. For a more calming atmosphere, the design also includes open spaces with tall windows in common areas.
