project overview
Unlocking a challenging site to create a unique learning environment
Making the most of the existing site, our innovative design solution brings to Blackpool a spectacular Church of England primary school building, with a fantastic outdoor learning environment.
One of the key challenges for this project was the constrained site, with a height generally quite unusual for a primary school. Using this to our advantage, the new build comprises of three storeys; with a unique roof deck area accessible through the second and third floors.
The roof space benefits from views across the town’s skyline, with space for educational activities or just general play.
For moments of quiet learning, the south-facing external terraces at the second floor include planters developed by pupils to produce a sensory garden, encouraging interaction with the environment.
The stunning stain glass feature, highlighting the link between the school and the parish, was developed following a school design competition, whereby the winning entry was taken by stain glass artist Dave Griffin and developed into a three-storey piece above the new school’s entrance.
Integrating students and the wider community into the design was important to us, and ensured people felt their needs were met and input was heard.
