PROJECT OVERVIEW

Bringing people together with the delivery of a new build community centre in Crewe

In line with St Mary’s Catholic Church’s aspirations to create a new community centre for the residents of Crewe, fundraising began back in 2011.

The church’s ambition was to raise enough money to create a hub that brought together the diverse needs of the community into a multi-functional space. This included providing an office for Catholic social action charity, Caritas Shrewsbury, as well as a long-awaited parish centre for the parishioners and surrounding community of St Mary’s.

Following the successful fundraising several years later, and under our longstanding relationship with the Diocese of Shrewsbury, we were appointed to provide professional consultancy services on a scheme to deliver the new build community centre.

We acted as lead designer, providing architectural design, geomatic and building consultancy services, including a topographical survey.

A new facility designed for use by all

The new stand-alone centre was built to replace the existing derelict car park, retaining some surrounding land for onsite parking. Parking availability increased, as well as accessibility throughout the building, which was essential to meet the practical needs of the client.

Careful consideration during the design process was given to the surrounding architecture, whilst maintaining its own individual character. For example, the colour and type of brickwork used in the build reflects that of the nearby buildings.

The completed centre includes an office space, kitchen and community hall with a secure outdoor area for children to enjoy, as well as accessible park and WC facilities.

I was delighted to have been invited to support the opening of the new centre, in Delamere Street - alongside the Right Reverend Mark Davies. It will make a massive difference to the lives of some people who might be struggling.”

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Prioritising sustainability with renewable energy

To keep the building’s energy costs and carbon emissions low and to reduce the need for mechanical ventilation, we used renewable energy sources with cross ventilation throughout. We also installed an air source heat pump, minimising the centre’s reliance on electricity and supporting their overall energy efficiency. This has enabled the building to achieve an A rated certification.

Providing support for more vulnerable members of the community

The centre was opened by Roman Catholic Bishop of Shrewsbury, Mark Davies and Mayor of Cheshire East Councillor, David Marren. Since opening, the centre has hosted several organisations which provide support to vulnerable members of the community, including Looking After the Homeless and Dementia Café.

Expanding its services, the centre also hosts community choir and dance sessions in the evenings, with additional plans to introduce a wider range of activities.
