Fishing Village, St Mary's Island
Chatham, UK
project overview
Riverside award winning residential development
Sitting on an estuary, our detailed design and delivery of the award winning Fishing Village provides 151 new homes among a strong, well defined river frontage with “River Streets” inspired by traditional Kentish villages, leading to the river edge.
Sector five of St Mary’s Island, Britain’s only strategically planned island community, the village recognises and retains the character and history of the 400 year old dockyard. The layout and street pattern focuses on creating a strong connection with the river, encouraging residents to not only enjoy water views but to also spend more time outdoors in the newly created river walk.
Following on from this, we were commissioned for the design and delivery of the final sectors (10, 11, 13 and 15) providing 339 of those homes, a community office and extra care housing for elderly people to live as independently as possible within the community.
Design approach
Flexible, sustainable and efficient home design
Our design introduces a flexible and economic architectural system of houses and flats, ensuring adaptability in combining individual homes into visually cohesive building blocks. We used an innovative ‘kit of parts’ system with modular design typology for part of the development in kitchens, bathrooms, en-suite showers and WCs.
Our design approach meant we could create unique design identity for each home, ensuring those homes are sensitive to their surroundings and contribute to an overall sense of place. It was an approach which culminated in the project receiving one of the first Building for Life Awards, as well as the National Home Builder Design Award for Best Brownfield Development.
