The Cutlers Arms and The Alma Tavern

Rotherham, UK

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Supporting the redevelopment of two historic town centre venues

As part of our client’s wider regeneration plans for the town, our geomatic consultancy team was appointed to deliver 3D Scan to BIM models of The Cutlers Arms and The Alma Tavern. The neighbouring buildings, which sit on Westgate in Rotherham town centre, are both owned by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council.

Originally dated 1825, The Cutlers Arms in Rotherham was rebuilt for Stones Brewery of Sheffield in 1907.

Designed by architect R. Wigfull, the now Grade II Listed building boasts an impressive facade, with an array of Art Nouveau-style stained glass, intricate stone carvings and curved windows.

Inside, the rooms radiate from a central lobby with many of the pub’s original features, such as the front bar with its back-fitting, curved counter and full height dividing screen, still in situ.

Despite facing demolition in the early 2000’s, the historic building was preserved after receiving statutory listing in 2004. Following a brief closure, the pub was restored in 2014, recapturing its original Edwardian grandeur.

Next to The Cutlers Arms sits The Alma Tavern. While not listed, the building boasts a striking facade, thought likely to be the last memory of Rotherham’s earliest commercial brewery. Unfortunately, the venue was permanently closed in 2006 and a fire in 2012 caused significant damage to the roof space.

innovation

Promoting efficiency using cutting edge technology

We gathered all the intricate details from both buildings in a time and cost-effective way by using high-tech laser scanners. This method also removes the need for cumbersome access equipment, such as scaffolding, which removes the risk of any damage to the buildings.

To ensure our client had a comprehensive overview of the two units, including the lay of the land and underground services, we also delivered topographical and utility surveys.

To continue to support the thriving music and culture scene in the town, the Council hope to redevelop the space to the back of both sites, capitalising on the successful music business which is already run from the rear of The Cutler’s Arms.

What we are looking at is to provide something at the rear of both buildings to keep the music scene going. We’re looking at a strategy with culture given there is so much interest in music within the town centre, and we need to work out how to pull all this together.”
